The Group

Research on magnesium, the lightest structural metal. The goal is to build Britain's capability.

Research
01

Thixomolding

Semi-solid processing of magnesium: shear breaks solidifying dendrites into a thixotropic slurry that flows under pressure into the die. We are measuring mechanical and corrosion performance against die casting.

02

Magnesium alloy design

Designing magnesium alloys specifically for thixomolding, built from abundant elements, with thermodynamics-guided engineering of the semi-solid window.

Previously, 2019–2025

Solid-state batteries

Five years on lithium alloys for solid-state batteries: alloy electrodes, interfaces and plating, and the mechanics of lithium metal.
